Jan. 27

We had a great SEP's.  We have so much parent support.  Our class has done an amazing job this year and they are very kind to each other.  We started do to another art project using warm and cool colors. In reading we are trying to use thicker sentences to make our summaries better.  We started our unit on time and we have learned the O'Clock and Half Past.

Jan.16-20

Reading:  Last week the children were each given the DRA test.  Every child made 1/2 years growth or more.  I encourage parents to work on the Fry Phrase list at homes.  Every child who has passed off their Fry Phrases Words Per Minute were at the end of 2nd grade Benchmark.  We also worked on naming 3 things about the characters we were reading about and making predictions.

We are starting to do a phonic chant in hopes to be able to look at words and be able to pronounce them without having to stop and decode them.

Math:  We took the money test.  Wow!  There was great progress!

Social Studies/Science: We looked at the temperature of different cities around the world.  We paid extra attention to the continents above and below the equator.  North of the equator were the coldest.  South of the equator were the warmest.

Art:  We started an art project that looks like an optical illusion.  We worked on drawing straight lines and becoming familiar with different shapes.

January 6

This week our reading groups worked on nonfiction text.  We looked at the content and index pages, as well as chapter headings and titles.  In our nonfiction book we cut or drew a diagram and wrote about how diagrams helps us understand what we are reading.

In math we are working on money.

In Social Studies & Science we started our unit on Asia.  We took different books with countries from Asia and pretended we were visiting there.  We made a postcard from that country.  We also looked at the temperatures of the different countries and drew pictures of what they would wear there according to the weather.

If your child is working on Fry Phrases-- they will need extra help at home.

January 3

Welcome back!

I had a wonderful Christmas Break and I hope all of you did too.

We are ready to get back to work.  In math we are working with money.  Any practice with real coins at home will really help.
