Oct. 19th

Reading:This week in Model Reading the students watched as I modeled  how to write a complete summary for a fiction text. We used the book "The Crayon Box That Could Talk". In Shared Reading we worked on finding the main ideas in nonfiction text.  We used our Trailblazer Newspaper that talked about using safe science tools and the National Geographic article called the "Big Sting".  In Guided Reading we worked on using Table of Contents and Index to answer questions along with finding details.  In Independent reading we worked on asking questions and relating things we already know to our books.
Writing:  We published our Scary Halloween stories by putting them up in the hall, highlighting all the adjectives, and decorating them.
Spelling and Word Work we worked on the long O sound using the CVCe pattern.
Math:  We took  three test: Review of everything we have learned this year, Fact Families, and a pre test on ODD and EVEN numbers.  We did an activity were we took of all our shoes and put them in pairs to see if they were odd or even.  Then we took beans and put them in groups of 2 and counted different numbers to see if they were odd or even.
Social Studies:  We had our North America picnic of hot dogs, apple pie, tortilla chips, and lemonade. We took our passports and wrote 3 things that we learned about the continent of North America.  Then we got it stamped.  Last of all this week we made of post card of a place we visited in North America and started to color our puppets of children dressed in native outfits.

We had a fabulous week!

Oct. 15th

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break.  I had the opportunity to go camping with my family and the mountains were beautiful and full of color.

Last week our whole class wrote a summary on the book "Hey, Al"  We worked on breaking the summary into beginning, middle, and end. Then each child wrote a Halloween story using the same format.  We were tying to use adjectives.  We will continue to edit these this week and hopefully they will be ready to put in the hallway.

We finished our unit on the continents and focused on North America.  We are planning to eat food from North America sometime this week.

We did "Fact Families" in math and we will be finishing that unit this week.

Oct. 1st-5th

Thank you parents for attending SEP's.  We had 100% turn out.  I enjoyed visiting with each parent and child.  Thank you for your support and all that you do for your children.

We had a great time on our field trip.  The Utah State University put on a Farm Field Day where the children go to see farm animals and learn about different types of farming in Utah.  It was the first time that some children have ever seen a pig.  We also went to Fresh Market and took a tour.  I think they were all surprised to go into a walk in freezer.

There will not be a poem or spelling words because of the short week.  The students only homework will be to read and do the math work sheet.  They will need to have dice in order to do the worksheet.
