Nov 9th

Reading:  We worked on making drawings of the beginning, middle and end of our guided reading books and then we wrote summaries.  We are trying to use key words such as "in the beginning, the problem was, next, then, after that, finally, in the end" to help us go in order and write about key events.

Math:  We continue to review what we have learned so far this year and we started our base 10 unit.  We are off to a great start.  Part of the students worksheet were to play a game where they rolled dice and  put them together trying to make the biggest number. Then they had to figure our how many 10's and ones there were. The player who rolled the biggest number was the winner. We also practiced using each child and their fingers.  If we had the number 57 -- 5 Children would stand up and put their 10 fingers in the air. Then one child would sit and put up 7 fingers.  He had to stay in the 1's place (sitting) because he did not use all 10 fingers.

Art:  We started a Thanksgiving collage of fruits in a horn-o-plenty.

Writing:  We finished our Thanksgiving Word poems.

Science:  We made pictures of Galaxies with a moon, sun, constellation, and a planet.  We finished writing notes from books we had read about the moon.  We held gulf balls and walked around a light. Our heads represented earth, the light the sun, and the gulf balls the moon.  We watched how the sun hits the moon at different times.  Then we ate Oreo cookies and talked about the moon phases as we ate them.

Social Studies:  We talked about the election and voting and we voted for people in our state as well as nation.  We discussed how the people we elect help make laws for our government.  We have been writing down definitions and drawing pictures of these words.  We also reviewed the weather of different cities in each of the continents and tried to be a meteorologist and predict the weather for own city.  We started to look at pictures of different places in Africa and talk about the types of things we would see if we visited that continent.

Oct. 29th-Nov. 2

Halloween is always a fun week.  Wednesday was dedicated  to Halloween Projects.  We read Halloween stories and sang songs. We painted scarey faces with chalk and white paint and we did Halloween math.   We counted 100 pumpkin seeds each and then counted them by two's and then tens.  When we had them grouped in tens the children each got a skittel.  When they had 10 skittels they got a pumpkin marshmellow.  The pumpkin seed represented ones, the skittles represented tens, and the marsmellow represented 100.  We finished our odd and even work and are going to take our test on Monday.

We started to learn our November songs and poems that we use in our stations.  And we drew pictures of the beginning middel and end of our guided reading books.  On Thursday each student wrote their own summary using the pictures they drew.  They did not have quesitions to follow and they had to use their pictures to guide them.  I was impressed by the results and I see we still have things to learn.

We read a story on the moon and took notes.  Then we copied the notes into our moon journals.  On Friday we made a diagram of the moon.

Sunday, October 28, 2012

We have been working on Odd and Even in math and will be taking a test this week.  In reading we did a summary on the book "Blueberries For Sal" and worked on finding main ideas from our Studies Weekly and National Geographic.

We had  the Red Ribbon Assembly and Bear Reading Assembly.  WE started our unit on Moon Phases.

Oct. 19th

Reading:This week in Model Reading the students watched as I modeled  how to write a complete summary for a fiction text. We used the book "The Crayon Box That Could Talk". In Shared Reading we worked on finding the main ideas in nonfiction text.  We used our Trailblazer Newspaper that talked about using safe science tools and the National Geographic article called the "Big Sting".  In Guided Reading we worked on using Table of Contents and Index to answer questions along with finding details.  In Independent reading we worked on asking questions and relating things we already know to our books.
Writing:  We published our Scary Halloween stories by putting them up in the hall, highlighting all the adjectives, and decorating them.
Spelling and Word Work we worked on the long O sound using the CVCe pattern.
Math:  We took  three test: Review of everything we have learned this year, Fact Families, and a pre test on ODD and EVEN numbers.  We did an activity were we took of all our shoes and put them in pairs to see if they were odd or even.  Then we took beans and put them in groups of 2 and counted different numbers to see if they were odd or even.
Social Studies:  We had our North America picnic of hot dogs, apple pie, tortilla chips, and lemonade. We took our passports and wrote 3 things that we learned about the continent of North America.  Then we got it stamped.  Last of all this week we made of post card of a place we visited in North America and started to color our puppets of children dressed in native outfits.

We had a fabulous week!

Oct. 15th

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break.  I had the opportunity to go camping with my family and the mountains were beautiful and full of color.

Last week our whole class wrote a summary on the book "Hey, Al"  We worked on breaking the summary into beginning, middle, and end. Then each child wrote a Halloween story using the same format.  We were tying to use adjectives.  We will continue to edit these this week and hopefully they will be ready to put in the hallway.

We finished our unit on the continents and focused on North America.  We are planning to eat food from North America sometime this week.

We did "Fact Families" in math and we will be finishing that unit this week.

Oct. 1st-5th

Thank you parents for attending SEP's.  We had 100% turn out.  I enjoyed visiting with each parent and child.  Thank you for your support and all that you do for your children.

We had a great time on our field trip.  The Utah State University put on a Farm Field Day where the children go to see farm animals and learn about different types of farming in Utah.  It was the first time that some children have ever seen a pig.  We also went to Fresh Market and took a tour.  I think they were all surprised to go into a walk in freezer.

There will not be a poem or spelling words because of the short week.  The students only homework will be to read and do the math work sheet.  They will need to have dice in order to do the worksheet.

SEPT 27TH

Reading: In modeled reading we have been starting to learn how to write and summary by looking at the parts: Beginning, Middle and End. In shared reading we worked on making our questions thicker. In guided reading we worked on nonfiction text features--mainly the titles of the Table of Contents. During independent reading the students were to write a "who, what, where, when, how, or why" question from one of their books.  Early Birds almost made 45 minutes of reading stamina.  Later Gaters did reach the 45 minute goal.

Math:  We took a test on "friends of ten" continued working on story problems and 100 chart, and we started to work on the number line.  We will continue to review and go deeper with story problems using the 100's chart.  We want the children to look for "friends of ten" in their work.

Social Studies:  We talked about the world, the continents, and the oceans.   We looked at a map of American Fork and the surrounding communities and located where it would be in Utah County and then where Utah is located on the map of the United States.

Science: We talked about how science is learning about animals, plants, earth, and space.  We learned why we study science and how people who study science make our life better.

Art:  We made shapes from nature and tried to make a painting like the artist Henri Matisse.  Look for our representation in the hall at SEP"S.

Music:  We learned our Halloween songs that we use as one of our stations during small group.

FIRST WEEK

We had a wonderful first week of school.  Here are some of the things we did this week

Reading:  We practice choosing "Just Right Books" and started to work on strategies on how to decode when we get to a word we don't understand.  Our first strategy was "Look at the Pictures".  We review the short and long vowel sounds.  We learned a song and yoga to help us learn theese vowels.  We focused on short "a" sound.

Math:  We worked on adding 10 to numbers and using the 100's chart.  We also worked on "Friends of 10".  If the children learn their "Friends of 10"  they will be able to solve math problems much easier.  We made a book mark for our math workbook with 10 beads on it to help us learn our "Friends of 10" better.

Social Studies:  We started to fill out our passports and talked about how our house is in a neighborhood, that is by our school, that is in a community, that is in the state of Utah, that is in the United States of America, that is the continent of North America that is in the world.  We made a model of our house and a floor plan of our using Modeling Clay.

Science:  Our caterpillars came earlier than we were prepared for so we quickly started our journal and will do more next week.

First Day Back

We had a good start to a new year.  We learned routines, sang songs and made cookies.  There will not be any homework this week.  About hale of the students have turned in their paper plate of things they like to do.  Please help your child glue pictures of things that they like or write words and glue them on to a paper plate.  We will be using this when they are the king or queen. (Sorry to those parents who did not get the letter mailed to them explaining this project.)

It was fun to see the exciting face and new clothes.  I think I enjoy this time of year as much as the students.

Thanks for the supplies that we have received so for and for your support.
