SEPT 27TH

Reading: In modeled reading we have been starting to learn how to write and summary by looking at the parts: Beginning, Middle and End. In shared reading we worked on making our questions thicker. In guided reading we worked on nonfiction text features--mainly the titles of the Table of Contents. During independent reading the students were to write a "who, what, where, when, how, or why" question from one of their books.  Early Birds almost made 45 minutes of reading stamina.  Later Gaters did reach the 45 minute goal.

Math:  We took a test on "friends of ten" continued working on story problems and 100 chart, and we started to work on the number line.  We will continue to review and go deeper with story problems using the 100's chart.  We want the children to look for "friends of ten" in their work.

Social Studies:  We talked about the world, the continents, and the oceans.   We looked at a map of American Fork and the surrounding communities and located where it would be in Utah County and then where Utah is located on the map of the United States.

Science: We talked about how science is learning about animals, plants, earth, and space.  We learned why we study science and how people who study science make our life better.

Art:  We made shapes from nature and tried to make a painting like the artist Henri Matisse.  Look for our representation in the hall at SEP"S.

Music:  We learned our Halloween songs that we use as one of our stations during small group.

Reading:  This week I modeled  how to write a summary by using the who, what, where, when and how questions. The students goal was to using our decoding or fix up strategies on words that they did not know.
Writing:  We wrote about our favorite spot.
Math:  We continue to work on "friends of ten" using more than 1 addend and using the 100's chart to do addition problems.  We talked how we jump down 1 place when counting by10's and we walk across the chart when add by 1's.  Most of the children are getting this concept, but there are a few who do not understand.
Science:
Social Studies:  We made a map of our school and talked about what makes up a community.  We drew pictures of places we like to visit in out town.  We worked on the map of the continents.
Art:  We looked at different artist and how they use lines in their art work.  Then we made designs using lines.

Sept. 7th

We had a fun week with a Read-a-thon and Chopper 5 coming to our school.

Reading: We have been working on learning decoding skills and making a goal in reading.  We have wrote our second summary on our guided reading books.  We answered questions like what is the setting and who are the characters.  We mainly used the "who, what, when, where, why and how" questions.

Math:  We continue to work on adding 10 to numbers and "friends of 10".

Writing:  We wrote about our favorite foods.

Science:  We are reading about the Painted Lady Butterfly and waiting for ours to come out of their pupa.

Social Studies:  We worked on symbols and keys on maps.  We located the North, South, East, and West on a map of the world.  We also talked about our neighborhood and used modeling clay to make our neighborhood and then we made a map our neighborhood in our Passport books.

Sept. 2nd

Reading:  We did our first summary last week and I was really impressed.  Some of the students did them all on their own and others I walked thru the whole process.  On Friday we went through the summaries and talked about what they did good and how they can improve.

Math:  We played some fun games for "Friends of 10", and using the hundreds chart.  They will doing these games as part of their homework this week.

Science:  We worked on maps.  We talked about looking at a map from a Birds Eye View.

We had an other wonderful week.  I really enjoyed the students acting out our vocabulary words.
